about

The local ordinance banning the posting of handbills on telephone poles was, to most of the indy band scene, Soviet tanks rolling into Prague plus Krystallnacht times the PMRC. If you think THIS protest song was a bit over the top in its response, well, you're lucky MY protest song on the topic never got recorded! Of course, being an ApoCowLypso song, it tended to collapse into self-parody...

Which is as good a time as any to discuss the title of this album. Brooke, Hunter and Paul/Manko agreed on the title "Posthumorous," and then Brooke went and died. (I like to think among his dying thoughts were a chuckling, "Oh Paul you GOTTA keep the title now!") During the process of reviving these ancient relics of a bygone millenium, Brooke asked me if I could remove several elements of his vocal on this track that, shall we say, did not age well...and some I could remove, and some I could not, and he was sheepishly okay with that. There were things he found hilarious in '87 that truly did seem posthumorous in '22, but we all hope to be forgiven for the tastelessness of our youth. (In Dika's case, her second adolescence?)

So...let's just say we are in complete agreement that blues songs that make light of prison rape and employ homophobic language do not reflect the best of the ApoCowLypso adventure; nor do Dika's songs celebrating violently abusive relationships. This is who we were, warts and all, and if you don't find it funny now, rest assured you're not alone in that.

And who played the piano? We don't really know, but Brooke and I agreed people would like it better if they thought Dika did, and that's entirely possible, so let's go with that. Sure.

"Hey," said Brooke one night at Alpina's after I played my weekly set, "Dika and me are putting together a band, three singers, three songwriters, would you be interested? And could you find us a drummer and a bass player?"
